Fires re-ignite in Big Sur area of California

Fires in California which appeared to be subsiding have flared again.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has ordered 200 National Guard troops to relieve firefighters who have been battling blazes on a 1,709 square kilometre front.

The blazes are burning from the western edge of the Sierra Nevada to coastal mountains near Big Sur.

The National Weather Service in Monterey is holding out little hope of rain or fog helping with the firefighting effort.

Apart from damage to property, the fires are being blamed for causing severe medical problems, such as asthma and other respiratory problems.
