Health officials confirm 1st COVID-19 death in Nueva Vizcaya

BAMBANG, Nueva VizcayaMarch 24(PIA) - Health officials here has confirmed the death of the first COVID-19 fatality in the Cagayan Valley Region from this province.

"We are sad to confirm our first COVID-19 death in Nueva Vizcaya," said Dr. Edwin Galapon, Provincial Health (PHO) who said he was allowed to reveal the information as authorized by the regional officials of the Department of Health (DOH).

He said the victim, 65 year old male was earlier confined with acute respiratory infection at the Region 02 Trauma & Medical Center (R2TMC) in Bayombong town last March 19 but died March 22.

Galapon, also the head of the Provincial COVID-19 Task Force said the victim earlier went to a wake in barangay Roxas in Solano town.

"Contact tracing is now being done to identify those who were also exposed to the victim. We were informed that the victim mingled with visitors who came from Hongkong," he added.

The victim's wife was also admitted at the R2TMC with the same ailment and now being treated, Galapon said.

He said the victim's COVID-19 positive laboratory result from the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine(RITM) was just released four days after his death. Galapon said the victim's body is still at the R2TMC's cadaver freezer .

"Again, we reiterate our warning to our fellow Novo Vizcayanos to refrain from going out of their houses.

COVID-19 is now in our province and following health protocols such as social distancing and religious compliance to the Enhanced Community Quarantine should be observed always," Galapon said.(MDCT/BME/PIA 2-Nueva Vizcaya)
