LJUBLJANA, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Slovenian government on Thursday decided to deploy the army to assist the police in joint border patrols, following a recent fatal incident in the country's southeast.
At the same meeting, a comprehensive bill was also adopted, granting additional powers to law enforcement and the judiciary to combat crime and improve safety in high-risk areas.
The measures were introduced after the killing of a 48-year-old man in Novo Mesto in late October, allegedly by a member of the Roma community. The incident sparked public debate over security and led to the resignations of the interior and justice ministers.
Under an amended defence act, soldiers will join police patrols but will not exercise police powers. Their role will include assisting with migration management and transport operations, allowing more police officers to focus on criminal investigations and public safety duties.
